The Importance of the Contractor's Role in a Construction Project
- Monday, 02 May 2016
Plans are drawn, a budget is allocated, a project manager defines the construction project's scope, and other stakeholders join the project. But who will actually put hammer to a nail and make the construction project a real, palpable building? The contractor's attention to detail will literally make or break the building itself. Such is the importance of the contractor's role in a construction project.
Going from a beautiful design to a solid structure
The architect or civil engineer has a vision in her mind. She designs every aspect of the new building from inside to outside. For it to become a reality, the interpretation and execution needs to be done by a well-trained contractor. Therefore, the communication process between design and construction is of the utmost importance.
Both the architect and contractor need to meet on several occasions from beginning to end. From the moment the design is introduced, to weekly updates on progress to make sure the construction site remains loyal to its design.
How contractors can influence design
Although the contractor's job description might be to follow the construction plans, there are be times in which contractors may influence details in the design itself. Reasons might include certain materials not being available, new found conditions in the construction site, construction techniques that might help reach a deadline. When it comes to day-to-day decisions, contractors have a say on how a construction project might shift gears in order to present a better result for the construction's stakeholders. Of course, there needs to be a decision making protocol in place; nevertheless, remember that empowering contractors needs to be part of that protocol.
All stakeholders add value to the final product
Remember, all stakeholders add value to the end result. Therefore, communication, respect, and acknowledgement are important to everyone in the long run.
